CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) has many definitions. The syndrome is described as persistent tiredness which does not go away by resting. Chronic Fatigue Syndrome weakens ability to work and personal activities. Also social activity weakens.
Only lately doctors have started to pay attention to Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. Until now the syndrome has been underestimated. CFS is difficult to be diagoned because the traditional lab tests do not reveal anything special. The main symptom for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is persistent fatigue. Other symptoms include different kinds of infections, headache, depression, anxiety, tender lymph nodes, muscle and joint ache and inability to concentrate.
Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is diagosed when severe tiredness has lasted for 6 months without any specific reason. Doctors find it difficult to diagnose CFS because the illness has same symptoms as many other diseases, for example multiple sclerosis. These diseases need to be ruled out before Chronic Fatigue Syndrome can be diagnosed.
We still don't know the causes for the syndrome. Stress or viral infection can start the symptoms of the syndrome. Antibiotics, pain killers may contribute for this disease. Sometimes CFS develops and starts gradually, without any specific illness or event contributing to the start of the syndrome.
Around 30-70% of the patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome also suffer from depression. Depression does not contribute to this syndrome but in some cases is a major part of this disease.
Women tend to suffer from Chronic Fatigue disease more often than men. Around 70% of the patients are women. The patients mainly come from middle class even though there are patients from every social class. CFS has been diagnosed in people of all ages, races, and social and economic classes from several countries around the world.
Treatment for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is very individual; it can take a lot of time to find suitable treatment. It's important for all the patients to have a healthy and balanced diet and also take some nutritional supplements in addition to the diet. Excercise according to individual resources is also beneficial.
